LEGAL PROFESSIONS IN JAPANInstruction about 'Lawyers' in Japan.
When you say 'lawyer' in Japan, there are several different qualified proffesion.
I recommend you to consult 'Bengoshi' or attorney at law in any legal problems due to the most wide range of practice.

Bengoshi are Attorneys at law.
They are the only individuals authorized to represent others in district courts, high courts, and the Supreme Court.
They are automatically qualified to practice in most Japanese legal professions (e.g. judicial scrivener, administrative scrivener, patent agent).
They are also authorized to give advice on matters of law.

Shiho-Shoshi are Judicial scriveners, authorized to represent their clients in real estate registrations, commercial registrations, preparation of court documents and filings with legal affairs bureaus.
They may also represent clients in summary courts, arbitration and mediation proceedings, but not allowed in district courts or more advanced stages of litigation.

Gyosei-Shosi are administrative scrivener, to prepare filings to government agencies, and other documents related to rights, liabilities and evidence of facts, for compensation at the request of others.
They are not qualified to give any legal advice, except for necessary preparation of documents.

Benrishi is Patent attorneys, to practice intellectual property law.
They usually represent clients in administrative proceedings and out-of-court bargaining related to IP rights.

Zeirishi are Certified tax account, to represent their clients in filing tax returns and out-of-court bargaining related to tax.
